La Jolla Playhouse’s Kiss My Aztec! is a wildly irreverent, high-energy musical comedy that blends biting satire, historical absurdity, and vibrant Afro-Latin beats into one unforgettable theatrical ride. Co-created by comedy icon John Leguizamo and director Tony Taccone, the show channels the spirit of hits such as The Book of Mormon and Spamalot, following a band of rebellious Aztecs as they take on the Spanish conquistadors—with the help of a fierce female warrior, an unlikely clown, and a chaotic cast of royals, and more.
Packed with sharp political wit, a genre-blending score, and dazzling choreography by Maija Garcia, Kiss My Aztec! is both a riotous parody and a celebration of resistance and identity with an unapologetically brown take on history that’s as smart as it is subversive.
