'Another Word for Beauty' is a powerful, music-infused play by Academy Award nominee José Rivera, directed by Steve Cosson, with original music by Grammy winner Héctor Buitrago. Premiering at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre, the production draws inspiration from real events at Bogotá’s El Buen Pastor women’s prison, where inmates participate in an annual beauty pageant designed by officials to promote rehabilitation. Through their stories, it examines themes of resilience, identity, and the complex interplay between beauty and confinement. With evocative choreography by Maija Garcia and a rich musical backdrop, 'Another Word for Beauty' offers a poignant look at the lives of women seeking dignity and hope within prison walls. The production invites audiences to reflect on the transformative power of art and the enduring human spirit.
